
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (And Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. You’ve got constant steam and moisture everywhere, which is basically an invitation for electrical shorts. A standard heater housing just won’t cut it here. You need something built for a place that’s practically a sauna.
Dealing with the “Drip” Problem
Here’s the thing: water vapor is sneaky. It finds its way through standard seals, turns into condensation on the heater’s frame, and suddenly you’ve got a path for electricity to go where it shouldn’t. We handle this by using double-insulated quartz envelopes. But the real secret is “potting” the connections. We basically drown the wire-to-lamp joints in high-temperature silicone or epoxy resins. No air gaps means no place for moisture to hang out. Also, don’t skimp on the grounding. Make sure your earth connection is heavy-duty. If the insulation ever fails, you want that breaker to trip instantly. You don’t want the heater’s chassis becoming live while you’re standing on a wet floor.
The Hardware That Actually Lasts
Most people mess up at the connectors. If you use those cheap, open-clip things, the steam will eat them alive. They’ll corrode, start arcing, and eventually just burn out. Stick with gold-plated or nickel-coated contacts. They don’t oxidize, so they stay clean. As for the housing, look for an IPX4 rating at a minimum. If it’s anywhere near a shower where it might actually get splashed, go for IPX6. We prefer shortwave infrared emitters. Instead of heating up the air—which just makes the room feel more humid—they heat you directly. It’s a much better feeling and keeps the steam levels down.
The Reality Check
Let’s be honest: no seal lasts forever. The constant cycle of heating up and cooling down puts a lot of stress on gaskets and resins. After about 3 to 5 years of heavy use, things start to wear down. That’s why you absolutely need a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) in your circuit. Don’t put all your trust in the lamp’s insulation. The GFCI is your safety net, and it’s the only way to sleep easy.
