
Making Your Workshop Heaters Actually Smart
Most workshop heaters waste a ton of energy trying to warm up the entire room—including the ceiling. Infrared heaters are different. They go straight for the target, warming up you and your workbench instead of the empty air. When you hook these up to a smart system, you stop waiting around for the room to “warm up.” You just get warm.
Heat that happens right now
Here’s the thing: infrared emitters don’t mess around. The second you hit a button on your phone or a smart switch, those filaments glow. It’s almost instant. Instead of fighting against a massive volume of freezing warehouse air, you get that immediate hit of warmth the moment you step onto the shop floor. It’s the difference between waiting for a furnace to kick in and just turning on a light switch.
Getting the brainy stuff right
If you want a setup that just works, we usually lean on Zigbee or Wi-Fi contactors. But it’s not just about remote control. You can set it up so the heat kicks in the moment a sensor sees you walk through the door, or when the temperature drops below a certain point. It just happens in the background. One heads-up on the electrical side: if you’re running a dozen or more high-power lamps, your breaker might freak out if they all slam on at once. We usually program a “staggered start.” The heaters pop on one by one in a quick sequence so you don’t end up sitting in the dark because you tripped the main panel.
The reality check
Now, smart tech is great, but it isn’t perfect. If your router crashes or the internet goes sideways, you don’t want to be shivering in a freezing shop. That’s why we always put a physical override switch on the main board. Old school, but it never fails. Also, remember that infrared works like a flashlight. If you put a big shelf or a mezzanine floor between the heater and your head, you’re going to have a cold spot. No amount of “smart” software can fix a physical blockage. Position them right, or you’re just heating up your storage racks.
