
Getting More Speed Out of Your Old PET Blowers
If you’re running a mid-sized operation with older blowing machines, you know the frustration. You want more bottles per hour, but the cycle times are dragging. Here’s a secret: you don’t actually need to drop a fortune on a brand-new machine. Most of the time, you can just swap out those tired old heating elements for high-density infrared lamps and see a real jump in production.
Let’s talk heat
The whole goal is to get that preform to the right temperature fast, without scorching the surface. That’s where high-wattage halogen quartz tubes come in. By packing more wattage into every millimeter, you cut down the time the plastic needs to sit there and soften. It’s faster. Much faster. But keep your head on a swivel regarding your power. You can’t just throw a 2500W tube into a circuit built for 1500W. If you do, you’re going to trip breakers or fry your contactors. Always double-check your amperage overhead before you start swapping things out.
The nitty-gritty on gear
We use quartz glass with special coatings. Why? Because it shifts the infrared spectrum. It pushes the heat deeper into the PET wall instead of just burning the skin of the bottle. Now, the connection point is where things usually go sideways. We stick to R7s and Sk15 bases because they’re basically a universal fit for most big brands. Just a tip: make sure the sockets are clean and tight. A loose fit causes arcing, and that’ll kill your lamp ends in no time.
The catch (because there’s always one)
More heat density means faster cycles, but it puts a lot more pressure on your cooling system. If you crank up the infrared output to push your production numbers, your oven’s ventilation has to be able to keep up. If the air inside the oven gets too hot, you’ll end up with uneven heating and deformed bottles. It’s all a balancing act. Match your lamp wattage with your blower capacity, and you’ll keep those preforms stable.
