
Getting More Out of Your Old PET Blow Molders
If you’re running a mid-sized operation with older machines, you know the struggle. You’re trying to hit your cycle times, but the machines just aren’t keeping up. You start seeing those annoying “cold spots” in the preforms, and suddenly your wall thickness is all over the place. A full machine overhaul? That’s a nightmare for the budget. But there’s a simpler way to get your output back up. Most of the time, it just comes down to the lamps. The secret is heat density. To speed things up, you need to get more energy into that plastic, and you need to do it fast. It’s all about how much power you can cram into a small space. Instead of sticking with a standard lamp, we move to higher-wattage halogen tubes. Whether you’re working with a 300mm or 400mm footprint, pushing more kilowatts through that space means the plastic hits its melting point much quicker. It just works. No need to rewire everything. We use heavy-wall quartz glass because these things get hot—really hot—and you don’t want the tubes bowing under the stress. The best part? Most of our replacements use R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re basically plug-and-play. You don’t have to tear apart your oven or spend a weekend rewiring the whole system. You just pop the old ones out and slide the new ones in. We also add a special coating to the quartz. It sounds technical, but here’s the gist: it stops the heat from bouncing off the preform and forces it inside the plastic. But here is the catch. More heat isn’t a magic fix. When you crank up the wattage to boost your speed, the inside of your oven is going to get a lot hotter. If your cooling fans are old or underpowered, you’re asking for trouble. You could scorch your preforms or, even worse, fry the machine’s electronics. It’s a balancing act. You’ve got to tweak your airflow to match that extra power, or you’ll lose the stability you’re looking for.
