
Fixing the Heat Problem in KHS Blow Molding Lines
Ever pull a bottle off the line and see those weird pearlescent streaks? Or maybe you notice the walls are way too thin in some spots and thick in others. It’s frustrating. Usually, it comes down to one thing: your heat distribution is off. When the thermal field isn’t hitting right, you get weak spots in the preform, and your quality tanks. That’s why we built our replacement lamps for the SMI SR 8 blower. We wanted to close those gaps and get the heat exactly where it needs to be.
The Nitty-Gritty on Heat and Fit
These aren’t some generic bulbs. They’re designed to drop right into your SMI SR 8 system without a fight. We spent a lot of time matching the wattage and voltage so the machine keeps its original thermal profile. We use high-wattage shortwave infrared lamps. Why? Because they push energy into a tight, concentrated beam. It hits the PET preform fast, which means your ramp-up time is quicker. No more waiting around. And here’s the thing about the fit: a few millimeters might not seem like much, but in a reflector, it’s everything. If the lamp doesn’t sit perfectly, the heat misses the mark. We machine these to tight tolerances so the focal point hits the preform exactly where it’s supposed to.
Quality That Actually Lasts
Cheap glass warps. When it’s inside a blower oven, standard glass just can’t take the heat and burns out way too soon. We use high-purity quartz instead. But it’s not just about the glass. We use a specific jigging process to keep the filament centered. You’ve probably seen cheaper tubes where the filament “sags” over time. When that happens, your heat center shifts, and suddenly your uniformity is gone again. We fixed that. As for the wiring, we kept it simple. We use industry-standard connectors, so you can plug them into your existing harness and get back to work. Plus, we reinforced the contact points so they don’t pit or overheat when the current kicks in.
One Quick Warning
Here is the trade-off: better heat density means the lamp runs hotter. You’ve got to keep your oven ventilation clean. If your cooling fans are clogged with dust, that extra thermal output can put a lot of stress on the electrical components around the lamp. Just keep your airflow clear and your sockets will stay cool.
