Why IP44 Actually Matters
When we talk about an IP44 rating, we’re basically saying the lamp is built to keep out anything larger than 1mm and can take a splash from any direction without breaking a sweat. The real enemy here is “tracking.” That’s when moisture sneaks in and creates a little bridge of water across the insulation. Once that happens, you’ve got a shortcut for the electricity to travel—and that’s how people get shocked. To stop that, we lean on double-insulated cabling and heavy-duty sealed gaskets. We make sure the insulation is way stronger than the voltage it’s carrying. It’s a safety cushion. It keeps the current exactly where it belongs: inside the wires, not in the chassis or, heaven forbid, in you.
Dealing with Heat and Humidity
Here is the tricky part. Infrared lamps get hot. Really hot. You’ve got a constant battle going on: the heat tries to expand the seals, while the humidity tries to push its way through them. If you use cheap rubber, it’ll harden and crack in a few months. That’s why we use high-temp silicone. It stays flexible, no matter how many times you flip the switch. And please,**don’t skimp on the grounding.**A solid, bonded chassis is your safety net. If a seal eventually fails and a live wire touches the casing, you want that breaker to trip instantly. The Trade-offs
Nothing is perfect. To get that IP44 protection, the fixture has to be a bit bulkier. You lose that ultra-slim, “designer” look because you need room for the gaskets and cable glands. Plus, because the unit is sealed tight to keep water out, it can trap some heat around the base. You’ll want to pick mounting brackets that allow for a bit of airflow. Trust me, you don’t want your wiring slowly cooking itself over the next year.
